Why Brain Plasticity Matters for Your Health
Your brain has the ability to adapt and change. Also known as neuroplasticity, and it may play a bigger role in your health than you realize.
Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.
Your brain is constantly adapting based on your environment, experiences, thoughts, habits, and physiology. In other words, your brain is always learning.
One of the best ways to think about neuroplasticity is use it or lose it.
The pathways we use regularly become stronger. The pathways we don't use begin to weaken.
This is true for learning a new skill, building healthy habits, stress responses, emotional patterns, and symptom patterns. The brain becomes efficient at what it practices most. If we repeatedly practice calm, safety, and flexibility, those pathways become stronger. If we repeatedly practice fear, hypervigilance, and stress, those pathways become stronger too.
Many people dealing with chronic symptoms have spent years in survival mode. Researching symptoms, scanning for signs that something is wrong, and feeling disconnected from their body.
The good news? If the brain can learn patterns that keep us stuck, it can also learn new ones that support healing.
Plasticity isn't just about positive thinking or changing your mindset. It's influenced by your entire environment, including your physiology. Which means physical inputs like sleep, blood sugar, nutrition, movement, and stress all influence the brain's ability to adapt and change.
It's much harder to build resilience and create new patterns when you're sleeping poorly, have unstable blood sugar, inflamed, running on chronic stress hormones, and depleted of nutrients. The physical body creates the environment in which the brain operates. This is why we often see the biggest shifts happen when people begin supporting both their physical health and their nervous system simultaneously.
At The Funk'tional Nutritionist, we believe healing isn't just physical and it isn't just mental. It's both. This is the foundation of our new app and systems biology program, Manifest Your Health (MYH).
Inside MYH, we focus on:
Supporting the physical body through nutrition, blood sugar balance, sleep, and gut health
Nervous system regulation
Rewiring unhelpful subconscious patterns
Processing emotions and creating safety within the body
Helping people reconnect with themselves and their capacity to heal
True healing requires creating an environment where both the body and brain can become more adaptable. If you’ve been struggling with chronic symptoms it’s worth reflecting on what environment you've been creating for your brain and body to heal?
