The Real Reason You Feel Stuck in Your Healing
You have the plan.
You’ve invested in the testing.
You’ve bought the supplements.
You understand what to eat, and yet… something is holding you back from following through consistently.
You start strong, then fall off.
You procrastinate, even when you want to feel better.
So you tell yourself: “I just need to be more disciplined” or “I need to try harder.”
Let’s be clear about something. This is not a motivation problem, and it’s definitely not because you don’t care enough.
When you feel stuck, it’s almost never a knowledge issue.
It’s a safety issue.
What “Feeling Stuck” Actually Looks Like
In this space, feeling stuck doesn’t mean doing nothing.
It usually looks like:
Starting and stopping protocols
Doing everything perfectly until you burn out
Over researching and second guessing
Waiting for the “right time” to start
Knowing what to do, but not doing it consistently
These patterns aren’t random, they’re protective.
We have versions of ourselves that come out in different situations. The two that we see most often when it comes to a healing journey are the healthy self and the survivor self.
Your Healthy Self
This is the version of you that wants to grow, is open to change, can take risks, and trusts the process.
This is the part of you that said yes to healing in the first place.
Your Survivor Self
This part is just as important. It’s rooted in real lived experiences, past stress, and past symptoms, past traumas.
Its job is simple: to protect you from anything that feels unsafe.
You don’t meet this part of yourself when things are easy. You meet it right in the middle of change.
This part isn’t trying to sabotage you, it’s trying to protect you. But it does that by pulling you back into what feels familiar… even if that’s what’s keeping you stuck.
How to Know When You’re in “Survivor Mode”
When we are our survivor self change is difficult and when we are able to recognize when it is happening it can help to reframe things.
Our survivor self tends to become more prevalent when we are tired, anxious, feeling inadequate or lonely. When these are high, you’re not operating from your grounded, clear, logical self.
This is when you overthink, shut down, or even avoid things all together.
You can have the perfect protocol.
The best supplements.
The most personalized plan.
All the right information.
This is why healing isn’t just about what you eat, what supplements you take, or how much you know.
It’s also about whether your body feels safe enough to actually implement what you know.
What Actually Helps You Move Forward
This is where we simplify things.
→ Awareness over perfection, notice your pattern before trying to change it
→ Name what’s coming up
→ Build safety in small steps, not all or nothing changes
→ Be honest about what’s actually happening, with yourself and with your practitioner
→ Adjust your expectations - healing is not linear, and it’s definitely not fast. A good practitioner should preframe this for you!
If you’ve been feeling stuck, know that you are not lazy, failing, or doing it wrong. Your system is doing exactly what it was designed to do, protect you.
Understand it, work with it, and build safety alongside change.
If this resonates, this is exactly the kind of work we do inside our 1:1 Functional C.A.R.E Method™. Our practitioners are here to guide you through whether that means holding your hand or being your accountability partner. Not just giving you a plan, but helping you actually follow through in a way that feels sustainable, supportive, and aligned with your body.
If you are a practitioner and want to understand how to provide this kind of whole person whole body care, this is what we teach in the Funk’tional Nutrition Academy (FNA). This blog post was inspired by a recent masterclass taught by Ali Shapiro in FNA.
